In the beginning, there was no multimedia. Or pictures. Just text and solid colors.

We've come so far since then.

TODAY,
The Internet as we know it
is under threat!

And our site is blacked out to highlight that fact!

Politicians worldwide have taken it upon themselves to try to take over the Internet. That’s not much of an exaggeration—it looks different in different places, but what is in common is that they all want you to show ID to get online.

It’s just a mess, quite frankly. They say it’s not safe online, that kids are too at risk now, and therefore everyone needs to fully show ID—
to see Wikipedia. Or Reddit. Or Spotify. The list goes on. Comply, or you could be blocked out entirely. Best case scenario: you get to see a kid-safe censored version of the web.

This is not why we have an Internet. There always have been—and always will be—people, from infants to mental patients to elders with dementia, who should be carefully looked after during their online time.

The Internet was made semi-anonymous and largely self-regulating specifically because we wanted free and open discourse here—including the downright dumb, offensive, and disingenuous.

That’s right. It was an intellectual playground originally. You might get tested, test your mettle, or be happily (or less happily) tricked online. What was also more common then was people having, and encouraging others to have, a sense of humor about it all.

If we lose that, the Internet won’t be much use to anybody—along with intellectual curiosity and the capacity to learn. Take those three things away, and you might as well log off right now.

Whatever you do here, try not to do it first—or only—from a standpoint of wrathfulness, ignorance, or presumption. Those are anti-Internet culture. They are better expressed offline, where it’s easier to assume everyone is a dog, anyway.

Politicians have never understood this medium, because it is anathema to their favored antics. If you inform yourself, consistently endeavor to do the same, and maintain a good attitude overall, you have very little use for a politician.

At long last, with every other problem in the world to focus on, they have truly come for the online world. If they get their way, everyone—including children—will be bagged, tagged, indexed, and filed for their own grotesque schemes in real life.

They say there are villains online; true, there are. But as the 20th century showed us—and those of us from that time were never allowed to forget—sometimes the predators wear suits, ties, or uniforms. They speak the language of states.

Before we all heedlessly cast aside doubt and caution and enter into a scheme to register ourselves here for officials’ benefit everywhere, we should consider alternatives, the consequences, and so on.

This is a lot to ask and give up for the promise of safety and security online. The costs are real and the benefits unknown. The risk of leak or compromise of these records exists, as does the potential for exploitation of biometric-coded tokens.

If I had a child, I would reasonably believe that, alongside myself, they were better off leaving high-level ID authentication out of most Internet activities they engaged in. It’s a matter of proportionate and proper access being maintained, which is part of overall security.

Instruct and monitor your dependents’ net access appropriate to their knowledge, skill level, and maturity. And tell the politicians we don’t want these bills! - JDawg
